The Q&A Archives: How Do I Prune My Rose Of Sharon Shrubs?

Question: I have many rose of sharon shrubs in my yard, & they are blooming but the branches are too long & VERY leggy! Please tell me when & how I should prune these shrubs!

Answer: These shrubs can be pruned back lightly or as much as needed to control size and shape. They bloom on the current season's wood, so the best time to prune is in late winter or very early spring. Pruning during the growing season would remove the current year's flowering wood.
