The Q&A Archives: Growing Grapes in Zone 4 (ONT)

Question: In the Summer 97 issue of Burpee Home Gardener, there was an article on grapes. Will the types of vines that will tolerate the cold winter temperatures also tolerate high summer temperatures? Some of the other information referred to "zones", but there was no zone map. Can you tell me what zone I live in? Its hard to tell this year because spring is so late. Thank you. Valerie Warren Pembroke, ON

Answer: Pembroke, Ontario is located in hardiness zone 4. Grapes that are hardy to zone 4 or below should grow well in your area. I wouldn't worry about the heat in summer. Most of the grape varieties you will grow will enjoy the summer sunshine and warm temperatures. So would I when we get some!
