The Q&A Archives: Tree Pruning

Question: What is the best time to trim sweet gum trees?

Answer: Generally speaking, it is better to prune them in late spring or early summer so that you can really see the effects of your pruning as you go along. Dead, dangerous or severely damaged branches (as by a storm) should be removed as they occur, however. These are naturally very large trees, so if you are trying to control size, you might want to consider another tree altogether.
