When should I trim my crape myrtles and river birch trees?

Nora,

Prune those plants in February for best results. Keep in mind however that they do not need much pruning. Crapes in particular are often way overpruned.

During the summer blooming season you can prune off the flower heads on your crape myrtle after they finish blooming. This is not necessary, but may help them direct energy into flower production rather than seed production.
