| THIS IS SUPPOSEDLY A GOOD TIME OF YEAR TO PLANT FALL CROPS. MY PROBLEM IS AS SOON AS THEY COME UP, THE YOUNG RABBITS EAT THEM. THEY GOT ALL OF THE FIRST PLANTING OF BEETS, BEANS, CARROTS, ETC. IS A ROW COVER ADEQUATE PROTECTION? DID I READ SOMEPLACE THAT TOBACCO JUICE HELPS. I HAVE SOAKED TOBACCO AND HAVE ABOUT 3 QUARTS. IF THIS IS TRUE, HOW DO I APPLY? ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS: DON'T WANT TO INJURE THE RABBITS AND MY SON SAYS HE IS GOING TO SHOOT THEM. WE KNOW IT IS RABBITS BECAUSE WE CATCH THEM IN THE GARDEN WHEN WE ARE OUT THERE, AND THEY ARE NOT AT ALL AFRAID OF US (MY FAULT SINCE I TALK TO THEM AND THEY ARE USED TO PEOPLE). |
| Rabbits can be a terrible pest in the garden. In my experience, the most effective long term solution is a fence. However, some gardeners report success using repellents, either the commercially formulated sprays or home made recipes based on garlic and/or pepper. Some gardeners also report that a pet dog or cat on patrol is a good deterrent. You might be able to cover the plants with cages made of wire mesh, but the bunnies may tunnel under them. I do not have personal experience using the row covers as protection from rabbits but it is always worth a try although I suspect they would tunnel under it. |
