The Q&A Archives: Small White Bugs On Potatoes

Question: WE are digging up our potatoes and they have many small white bugs eating into them. Many are alraedy rotted and the potatoes have black spots in them when peeled. These bugs are very active and extremely tiny.

Answer: Based on your description I suspect you are seeing symphylan -- they are very quick and only about 3/8 of an inch long. I would suggest you contact your local county extension (837-1402) for a definite identification of the pest and the most up to date control recommendations for it. I'm sorry I can't be more specific.
