I just purchased a stem of "red velvet" (common name) in California. What is the scientific name and can I get it to grow from seed in my area?

Lobivia crassicaule cv. Red Velvet is a member of the cactus family and Lagerstroemia 'Red Velvet' is a woody perennial. Seeds are available from Cyberseeds, PO Box 171102, San Antonio, TX 78217. Either plant will grow indoors during the winter, or in a greenhouse in your gardening region.
