The Q&A Archives: Recipe for Soiless Mix

Question: Can you give me some advice on what's a good soiless mixture? I know peat moss is included but what kind of fertilizer should I use? Thanks. Mai Quincy, MA

Answer: The ingredients for a soilless media include peat moss, perlite and vermiculite. The proportions are a matter of preference. Try 2 parts peat moss, 1 part vermiculite and 1 part perlite. If you are using this mixture to start seeds, omit the perlite. An easy way to incorporate nutrients is to add a slow release form of fertilizer..such as Osmocote.
