For the last two years I have had
an ongoing problem with moles and
gophers. I have tried several types
of traps, poisons, gas bombs, those
electric vibrators you put in the
ground and just about everything
else. I spoke to a guy on the plane
who had problems like me and said
he bought a product that hooks up
to his car tail pipe and connects
it to his garden hose and stuck it
in the ground to gas them. He tried
everything else too and said he
solved his problem with this product
he bought at a store. It has to work,
and since nothing else does, I want
to try it. Have you ever heard of
it? Do you know where I can get one.
Thanks for your help. Bill

I've heard similar stories, but my concern is with poisons from the car exhaust remaining in the soil after the treatment you describe. There are lots of reported remedies for getting rid of gophers, including plants and homemade concoctions, nothing really works except trapping the creatures. Gophers and moles feed on grubs and other insects in the soil. As long as you have healthy soil teaming with beneficial insects and their larvae, you'll have the potential for attracting gophers. To get rid of gophers, invest in a scissors-type gopher trap, and set it carefully - as often as necessary to catch and kill the entire population. Once you've gotten rid of the gophers, encourage your neighbors to do the same. If it's any consolation, gophers in your yard are a compliment to your skills as a gardener. They prefer rich, moist, organic soil teeming with insects!
