The Q&A Archives: Pruning Japanese Red Maples

Question: What is the proper time to prune a Japanese Red Maple tree?

Answer: Early spring, just as new growth begins is the best time to prune plants. If you prune too late in the year, such as late summer or early fall, you'll encourage the plant to put out new growth. This new growth will be quite susceptible to winter damage. Wait until spring to prune your maple.
