| Egg fruit tree is Pouteria campechiana, also called white sapote. This is a tropical plant and needs to be grown indoors in your gardening region, at least during the winter months. Provide warm temperatures and bright light; direct sunshine is beneficial to the plant. The plant does best in slightly acid soil that drains well. Water frequently during the growing season, sparingly during the winter months. Your egg tree can grow to 50' in its native habitat but you can keep it at any height you choose by pinching out the tip of the growing stem. This will force the branches into an umbrella shape. Pinch or prune off lower branches if you'd like a bare trunk. The tree will bear a heavy crop of 3"-4" round, pale green to yellow fruits which ripen August through November. The fruits have a custard like consistency with a peachy-banana flavor. |
