| I have a number of small alpine currants along the side of my house. Last year a few of these plants became unhealthy and I had to replace a couple. Now that all of the plants are healthy, I would like to cut back the older plants to produce a even height and a more attactive appearance along my house. When is the best time of year to do this? I live in northern Illinois. |
| You can prune your currants in the spring, removing up to one-third of the stems of the older plants. You'll be losing some of the fruit crop, though, because currants produce flower buds over several months, beginning in mid-summer. |
