I have arborvitae (not sure what type, they are tall and narrow) that I planted this year (May/June) that now have brown/grey leave tips, as well as fairly large patches of the same looking brown leaves on interior branches. What is the cause and how do I treat this?

Unfortunately, arborvitae are subject to a number of foliar problems with similar symptoms which make it difficult to diagnose the problem long distance. Since these are new plants, you may want to consult with the supplier now in case they are under warranty and continue to decline. I would suggest you consult with your county extension for a specific diagnosis and suggested remedies, if any. I'm sorry about your shrubs.
