How do I care for a Holly Bush? Does it need trimmed as it is growing? Does it need fertilizer and special care? Will it winter over the winter months? Thanks. |
Hollies do best in a rich, humusy, moist yet well drained soil. Use a ferilizer for acid loving evergreens according to the label instructions. To encourage healthy vigorous growth make sure the plants receive adequate water for the first three years. Remember to water deeply less often rather than a daily light sprinkling. A layer of a few inches of organic mulch can also be helpful, be sure to apply it around but not touching the stems or trunk. Hollies are reasonbly hardy and yours should winter over just fine. To keep your holly dense and compact, do a little pruning during the winter months (and take the trimmings indoors for holiday decorations!). Good luck with your holly. |
