How often should we water newly planted (approx. 3 wks.) Dark American Arborvitaes now and through the winter for northern NJ? Some seem to be getting brownish/yellowish at the bases.

It is important to keep the soil slightly moist until the ground freezes, but at the same time these plants are sensitive to over watering, too. Yellowing at the base can be a sign of too much water. Check the soil with your fingers and only water if it seems dry. During the fall, the lower temperatures and seasonal rains often make watering unnecessary, especially if the plants have been given several inches of mulch over the root zone.
