I am going to buy a 4-5 foot scarlet oak tree can you tell me how tall and wide they get and how much they will grow each year and also will I be able to grow lawn under the tree. and anything else you can tell me about this tree would be a great help.. |
According to Michael Dirr's "Manual of Woody Landscape Plants", the scarlet oak (Quercus coccinea) grows about a foot or two a year and matures to about 75 feet tall and 45 feet wide in a landscape situation. Fall coloring varies so individual trees may turn a better shade of red than others. The tree's native range includes Maine to Florida and west to Minnesota and Missouri. As with any large tree this one will reduce the amount of sunlight and moisture reaching the ground, thus making it more difficult for lawn grasses. However it does not produce the type of surface roots that make a lawn nearly impossible. |
