I planted shrubs in the Summer of this year. I bought some fertilizer but haven't used it yet. Should I feed the shrubs this fall (October) or wait until early spring?

Wait until early spring just as new growth is beginning. If you fertilize now the plants could put out a flush of tender new growth that is susceptible to frost damage. The shrubs should be going dormant soon in preparation for winter, so they won't use the fertilizer anyway. It is, however, a good idea to make sure they have adquate moisture before the ground freezes.
