Should I continue fertilizing my perennial plants (daylillies, mums etc.) after the first frost?

As a rule perennials do not require ferilizing in the fall. They need to reduce their rate of top growth and direct any energy to their roots. They also need to harden off before the cold weather, so it is not a good idea to be applying nitrogen late in the season.
