The Q&A Archives: What is Vermiculite?

Question: You people have been wonderful! Thank you. What is vermiculite? Thanks.

Answer: Vermiculite is made from a type of mica--a mineral that naturally occurs in compact, flat plates. (Thin sheets of mica were historically used as windows--thin sheets are quite transparent.) When the mica is heated to a high temperature, it expands and the plates separate and sort of fluff up. Vermiculite is made from this expanded mica.
