Question: I planted 2 different varieties of bearded Iris in my yard this Spring. They never came up. Do they require a period of cold before growing?

Answer: Bearded iris rhizomes planted in the spring should certainly grow foliage and may bloom the same season. Unfortunately, it sounds like yours died.
