Asparagus should be trimmed off short after frost has killed back the tops. Mulch heavily for the winter with an organic mulch such as compost or well aged and rotted manure. This will help feed the soil as it breaks down. In spring, harvest the spears by cutting them with a sharp knife. Do not harvest from a first year planting, harvest very lightly from a second year planting. In spring, apply additional compost and/or a complete fertilizer according to the label instructions. Mulch around the plants to hold down weeds and conserve moisture.
