This spring we planted two types of asparagus (from Burpee's). They came in tall and thick. What do we do to prepare this bed for winter? We haven't cut any of them back yet.

Once frost has killed back the tops, trim them off short and remove them. For the winter, apply several inches of organic mulch or a very thick layer of compost or a thick layer of well aged manure over top of the bed. This will break down gradually and help feed the soil -- important since not only is asparagus a heavy feeder, but it also stays in place for many years.
