The Q&A Archives: Black Spot on Maples

Question: I have several large maple trees. some of the leaves
have large black spots on them, like the color of tar.Is
this black spot.If so, how do i treat it? They are a little large to spray.Very wet summer up here this past year.

Answer: Maples are subject to a variety of foliage problems both bacterial and fungal, some of which are serous enough to warrant treatment and many of which are not, especially this late in the growing season. I would suggest you take a sample to your county extension (461-1000) for a definite identification of the problem and suggestions of how to treat it, if treatment is in fact necessary. It would be worthwhile asking about it now, in case it is something that should be treated during the dormant season or very early in the spring.
