Dear friends at Burpee, I have used your seeds and plants for many years, even though I have used your catalog mainly as a guide, love your selection. My question is should I wait to plant some iris bulbs that I just bought at a lawn and garden store, or wait until spring to do so? They are still in the packages (sold individually). As You can see we live in central Illinois. The ground is still workable here but it is starting to get very cold.

In my experience, it can be difficult to store iris rhizomes successfully over the winter. I would suggest planting them now, in a location that is particularly well drained. This should help minimize any heaving due to freezing and thawing action. Applying several inches of mulch over the root zones but not overtop the rhizomes themselves should also help.
