Unfortunately, late fall is not a good time at all to transplant these plants and in my experience it is very difficult to dig and store them at home over the winter successfully. They are best moved in summer after the first bloom period, or possibly in very early spring. Maybe you could send him a picture of the iris in a December birthday card with an "IOU" and then follow up with the plants in a few months.
