Apple trees should be pruned in late winter (February in your growing region), before new growth begins. Begin by pruning out any broken, dead or diseased branches and any that are crossing or rubbing. Then prune your tree to shape.
The Virtual Orchard "http://orchard.uvm.edu" has a website with additional growing and pruning information. Hope you find it helpful.
