I'm doing a science project on how the ph of the soil affects plant growth. What could I add to the soil to make it more acidic or basic? how would I test this?

Simple soil pH test kits are available at garden centers and through mail order. Typical ingredients to raise pH would include lime and wood ashes. Typical amendments to lower pH would be acidic organic materials such as pine needles or oak leaves, faster acting would be aluminum sulfate.
