The Q&A Archives: Growing Asparagus in Zone 3 (AK)

Question: I would like any information and hints you might have on growing asparagus in my area. We live about 50 miles north of Anchorage Thank you. Ed Kosinski Wasilla, AK

Answer: Zone 3 gardening...I won't complain anymore about growing in Zone 4! I know folks who live in Zone 3 of Vermont, and they plant asparagus this way: in well-drained, rich organic soil, 15" apart and 4"-5" deep. Mulch them well to reduce weed competition. In the fall, after you have cut back the yellowed "ferns", layer on compost and more mulch to protect the crowns and enrich the bed. Most of all, good drainage is important. The soil will warm more quickly in the spring if it is not waterlogged.
