| I have been given several hostas that are bare root in plastic bags. Since our soil is frozen, is there something I can do to save them over the winter. |
| You could plant them in pots and set them in a cool area such as an unheated garage where the roots may grow but the tops should stay dormant. Keep the soil just barely moist but not wet. Plant them in mid spring so they can come out of dormancy naturally with the season. Otherwise, a cool but frost free, bright location might set them into growth and they will need as much light as possible. If you do this, the leaves will not tolerate frost, and so you will need to condition them to the outdoors gradually next spring after all danger of frost. |
