The Q&A Archives: Using Straight Eights' Cucumbers for Pickling

Question: Can I make dill pickles from Straight Eights' or is this not recommended? With Straight Eights' I could have both slicers and picklers, if this would work. Lori Roinstad Yankton, SD

Answer: Commonly you grow "pickling" cucumber varieties to make pickles. These varieties include 'Burpee Pickler' and 'Picklebush'. Of course you can make pickles out of any cucumber variety, but 'Straight Eight' is primarily a slicing variety and pickles made from even the young cucumbers may not have the crispness and texture you desire from pickles. I'd stick with picklers to make pickles.
