The Q&A Archives: Buying Compost

Question: Does compost have to be home-made or can it bought at garden centers? I don't think I've ever seen any for sale.

Answer: Compost can be homemade, some garden centers will sell it in bags along with the bagged potting soil and topsoil, and some will sell it by the scoop from a huge pile. Compost quality varies widely depending on what ingredients were used in its making, so you may find that "compost" can mean different things to different suppliers. If you make it at home, you will know for sure what went into it.
