The Q&A Archives: Searching for Herbicides that Kills Only Weeds

Question: Is there any herbicide on the market that can be used in a flower garden that will take care of the weeds and leave the flowers alone? Possibly some kind of selective herbicide. Roy Tuttle Palm City, FL

Answer: Unfortunately, the only herbicides I know of for home gardeners are mostly contact types such as 'Sharpshooter' that kill whatever they come in contact with. You can try to selectively spray just the weeds if no flowers are close by, but that's a risk you have to decide to take. I'm afraid you're left with hand pulling the weeds and them mulching the garden with pine straw or bark mulch to keep them out.
