What do I need to feed my Japanese maple and when? Do I need to prune my Japanese maple and when? |
Japanese Maple will tolerate full sun but prefer shelter from hot afternoon sunshine, and they like moist but not waterlogged soil. They will adapt to most soils but grow especially well in acidic and organic soils. Most landscape trees and shrubs require one-inch of water per week during the growing season. Regular pruning isn't necessary, but you may want to remove misplaced or damaged branches early in the season (March or April). Unless the growth or leaf color is poor, regular feeding isn't required, either. You may want to mulch around the base of the tree with 2-3 inches of organic material to slow water evaporation and to provide nutrients to the surface roots of your maple while it's young. Apply mulch in the spring, keeping it a few inches from the trunk of the tree. |
