The Q&A Archives: Growing Medium for Begonia

Question: What is the recommended potting media for growing tuberous begonias and for growing geraniums in container? Should it consist of shredded peat moss and vermiculite or shredded peat moss and perlite or a combination of all three? Should sand be incorporated in the mix? Should peat humus be incorporated in the mix?

Answer: Here's a basic recipe that I've found successful for containerized plants and hanging baskets:

1 part finely sifted topsoil
2 parts finely sifted compost or leaf mold
1 part coarse builders sand
1 part Perlite or Vermiculite

Geraniums and begonias thrive in this mixture!
