In early December for several nights, even after a killing frost, hundreds of bugs crawled out of the lawn and up the front of my house. They are brown, about 1/2inch long, very skinny. They look like worms, but don't move by wriggling like a worm. They might have very tiny feet. They look very much like the baby tent caterpillars you see inside the tent. (I do get those on crab apple trees in the spring, but control them, and this is not the right season for them to be around.) These came out in the evening, and each morning they were gone. I've looked in many gardening books, but don't see anything like them. They are gone now, we have about a foot of snow on the ground, but i am afraid of what might be there in the spring. My lawn looked fine all summer and fall. Any ideas of what these are?

Based on your description, unfortunately I have no idea what they could be, unless possibly some type of millipede. I would suggest you contact your county extension (461-1000) and see if they can help identify it and suggest a control if a control is in fact necessary. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.
