| We live near the coast in northern California and are having no luck growing tomatoes outside. They grow very well for the first 8 weeks and then just start dying. The ones in the greenhouse are still producing in January, but only a few tiny ones. Can you help me with a type to try? |
| Sure! You'll have good success with tomatoes developed for short, cool growing seasons such as Early Girl or Burpee's Early Pick. If your plants are suddenly wilting, it could be due to disease, rather than environmental conditions. Just to be on the safe side, plant your tomatoes in different garden spots each year (or use fresh potting soil and sterilized containers)so you don't accidentally expose your plants to leftover disease pathogens. Try to water the soil, not the plants, and provide lots of elbow room between plants to encourage good air circulation. Provide your plants with as much direct sunlight as possible and they should perform well for you. |
