The Q&A Archives: Caring for Cosmos

Question: I need to know how to take care of the Cosmos flower plants that I bought. Do I cut the dead flowers down to the ground? And what about winter? Do I cut the plant to the ground or just leave alone? Bill Zickenberg San Ramon, CA

Answer: Cosmos is an annual and will keep on blooming if you remove the spent blossoms. Cut them off back to the next leaf. If you leave a few flower heads, the plant will probably reseed itself. When winter approaches, you can competely remove the plant or leave it for cleanup in the spring...whichever you prefer!
