| The standard advice is to dig a hole slightly deeper than the root mass, and twice as wide. Amend the soil with organic matter, mixing it in well. Then place a mound of soil in the bottom of the hole and drape the roots over the mound. It's important to carefully build the mound up so that the graft union on the rose stem will be above the soil surface when you've finished planting the rose. Once you've done that, fill in the hole, gently tamping the soil around the roots of your rose. Build a basin on the soil surface to hold water, then water deeply to eliminate air pockets around the roots. Be sure to plant your roses in full sunshine, and water them deeply by flooding the basin and allowing the water to slowly penetrate the root mass. |
