| If the area you have in mind has had organic matter only dumped there, the soil should be just fine for a vegetable garden. If other things have been dumped there, such as old oil cans or pesticide containers, then the area should be used for ornamental plants, not edible plants. A good vegetable garden site is one that will receive all day sunshine during the summer months, and soil that is rich in organic matter so it drains well. You can begin in early spring growing cool-season veggies such as peas, lettuce and cabbage.
