Usda Zoning Map - Knowledgebase Question

Looking at the map on www.usda.gov I was unable to determine what zone I would be in - is there a better way - possibly by zip code to determine zone? I just moved here from the midwest and am a new gardener. Thanks.

There are two ways for you to determine your actual hardiness zone. One is through the following website, and the other is by thumbing through a copy of Sunset Western Garden Book. I'd vote for the book! The publishers have gone to a great deal of trouble to divide growing zones into microclimates, based upon elevation and proximity of bodies of water. Check out a copy at your local library or bookstore. Here's the website:
