The Q&A Archives: Zonal Geraniums, Etc

Question: Please explain to me the difference between Zonal Geraniums and just geraniums. Also when planting these plugs, is it better to snip off the top or just the bottom leaves.

Answer: Many people use the terms interchangeably, but in a more technical sense a zonal geranium has the typical colored markings on the leaf. They are all pelargoniums. When taking and starting cuttings, remove any leaves that would be below the soil line and leave the tip intact.
