There are several types of umbrella plant or Cyperus. One of them, C.papyrus, can grow as tall as 13 feet, although the typical range of height is from about 5 feet and up. To encourage the plant to stay as short as possible, provide as much direct bright light as you can and avoid oversupplying it with nitrogen fertilizer. You can also trim off the tallest stems at the base to encourage new stems to grow, but if your plant is determined to grow to the top of the range there isn't much you can do in the long run to control its height.
