The Q&A Archives: Variegated Hosta with All Green Leaves

Question: I have variegated hostas and noticed the leaves are turning all green. Is this a lack of some nutrient? Thanks. Suzanne Wright Ridgefield, CT

Answer: There are several things that could affect the variegation in your hostas. The color variations do not show up for a few years, so if your plants are young, they may just need time to develop color. Also, the variegated types need a little more sun to show their best color. Don't move them to full sun though, since hostas need some shade. All hostas like neutral to slightly acid, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter, so regular additions of aged manure or compost will keep them at their best.
