My sons are sports fanatics and have never taken any interest in our family garden. Do you have any ideas for incorporating sports in a garden to catch their attention?

You can't grow soccer balls and basketballs, but you can combine sports and gardening in a theme garden. Pick a sport (or one for each boy); let them brainstorm off-the-wall sports-garden ideas, such as a vine-covered hoop or an arch of lacrosse sticks. Here's a sample: A snowboarder's garden could start with an old snowboard for a garden bench and a scarecrow in full gear "catching some air." Around these you could plant 'Carpet of Snow' alyssum, 'Snow Nymph' salvia, 'Polar Bear' zinnia, 'Snowball' turnip, 'Snowy' eggplant, and snow peas, for starters. Your sons can easily build these structures and plant the garden with your help.
