The Q&A Archives: Roses Under Black Walnut

Question: Will Roses grow under a Black Walnut tree canopy?

Answer: According to the University of Virginia Cooperative Extension, wild roses will grow under the black walnut.

I would suggest, however, that roses need a full day's sun plus ample water and ample nutrients to do their best and that the combination of shade and root competition might result in the roses performing poorly.
