Unfortunately I can not find a specific reference for this plant's sensitivity or tolerance to juglone, the chemical in black walnut roots (and other parts of the tree) that causes the problem. Chinese lantern is a very tough plant once established, so my inclination would be to experiment with a plant or two and see what happens. However, this perennial prefers full sun, so it may not do well under a large tree simply due to the shade in that location.
