The Q&A Archives: Controlling Weeds in Asparagus

Question: How can I get weeds out of my asparagus bed? I'm afraid of damaging the new growing stalks if I use sharp tools, but hand weeding just doesn't make a dent. Are any weed killers safe to use on asparagus? Susie Valaitis Waldoboro, ME

Answer: Using organic mulch in the asparagus bed is the best way to prevent weeds. If your weeds are already thick between the rows, you can lay down black plastic on top of the weeds to smother them, and then lay down the mulch to hide the plastic. To make hand-weeding easier around the plants, water the soil well beforehand. I would not recommend any herbicide around food crops.
