What type of low ground cover would go in the back yard? It will be in full view from the kitchen window? It will be in full sun in the am til late afternoon, on a small sloped hill. It needs to look nice all year.

There are several plants that come to mind - how about Ajuga (carpet bugle), with glossy leaves and spikes of purple-blue flowers in the spring? Or Carpobrotus (ice plant), Aptenia cordifolia 'Red Apple', or Gazania. You can find pictures of these plants in Sunset Western Garden Book. Hope one of these is just what you're looking for!
