Answer: When directions for sowing seeds state "sow on surface" it means the seeds need natural light in order to germinate. After the seedlings have sprouted, remove the plastic covering and move your flats under a source of artificial light. Fluorescent lights should be only 2" above the tops of the seedlings, and kept on for 12-14 hours each day. Raise the light source as the seedlings grow, keeping it between 2"-4" above the tops of the plants. Good luck with your new little plants!
