I have just started my flats of Petunias. I know that the seeds need to be scattered on the top of the gowing medium and that they need light to germinate. My question is, how much light? Do they need just natural light until they germinate or do I need them under the flourescents already? They are covered in clear plastic. Any other tips would be appreciated. |
When directions for sowing seeds state "sow on surface" it means the seeds need natural light in order to germinate. After the seedlings have sprouted, remove the plastic covering and move your flats under a source of artificial light. Fluorescent lights should be only 2" above the tops of the seedlings, and kept on for 12-14 hours each day. Raise the light source as the seedlings grow, keeping it between 2"-4" above the tops of the plants. Good luck with your new little plants! |
