| Some good plants to consider are: Coreopsis, Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia), Russian Sage (Perovskia 'Filigran'), Autumn Joy Sedum (Sedum Spectabile 'Autumn Joy'), and Ballerina Hardy Geranium (Geranium cinereum 'Ballerina'). A vining plant worth consideration is Calylophus hartwegii. It has flowers which resemble evening primrose, and is a hardy, vigorous climber. You can grow Buddleia (Butterfly Bush), Caragana arborescens (Siberian Peashrub), Caryopteris clandonensis (Blue Mist), Ceanothus (Wild Lilac), and Arctostaphylos (Manzanita), as well. When preparing the planting area, be sure to incorporate lots of organic matter -- leaves, compost, well-rotted cow manure-- to help your sandy soil retain water. Also, remember when the plants are first installed, you will need to water regularly to keep your new plants healthy. |
